I was watching his biography on HBO recently. Found some things about
him i never knew about him interesting and some not so good.
I have respect for Ted Williams as a player but little respect for him
as a person. HBO mentioned how when his own mother was ill rather then
go back to San Diego and visit her Williams instead went fishing. What
kind of person does this to his own mother? It Sounded to me like
Williams wasn't that good of a son. Your mother's health is more
important then going on some off baseball season fishing trip. Williams
wasn't even that good of a father either. He wasn't even at the birth of
his first born child, instead rather be out fishing. It was mentioned
how Williams did a lot for child working with the Jimmy Fund. But
Williams did very little for his own children.
Some of these things didn't go to well with Red Sox fans. But Williams
didn't seem to care about what people thought of his character. He said
once in a interview, "I really don't care what they think about me in
Boston, because i'd rather be playing in New York anyways".
All i can say about that is watch out what you wish for. Red Sox came
lost to trading Williams to New York. What killed the deal was Thomas
Yawkey was too greedy by asking for Yogi Berra.
