Dodgers right fielder and all star Andre Ethier has a Red Sox
connection. He and Dustin Pedroia went to college together at Arizona
State, are still best friends, and often see each other in the off-
season. Either came up with the Dodges in 2006 and has always been
good.
Here are his numbers
YEAR PA 2B 3B HR RBI BA OBP SLG
2006 411 20 1 11 55 .308 .365 .477
2007 505 32 2 13 64 .289 .350 .452
2008 596 38 5 20 77 .305 .375 .510
2009 685 42 3 31 106 .272 .361 .508
2010 585 33 1 23 82 .292 .364 .493
2011 100 8 0 2 13 .382 .450 .538
Andre is a good RFer with a strong arm. He could be a giant with
Boston.
The timing could be perfect. Drew's contract in up this year and for
about the same money, Ethier could be a considerable improvement. Also
Cameron's foolish deal ends after 2011. Scutaro's contract expires,
Wakefield will retire if he lasts the season, and just maybe Varitek
will be belatedly let go. There is a better than 50-50 chance that
Ortiz will also be gone. That leaves a lot of money available. Ethier
could step right into the lineup and hit the hell out of the ball in
Fenway as compared to Dodger Stadium.
Just one problem. Either was first called up to the Dodgers at the
beginning of May 2006. That means sadly, he won't be a free agent
until after the 2012 season. It was almost perfect. That's why it is
Ethier said than done. Andre was born 4-10-82. That extra year
figures to cost him a year and some dollars if he hits the market just
before he turns 31 instead of 30. If the Dodgers are really so cash
strapped and fall out of contention, maybe they would take JD back*
along with some money to help cover his remaining 2011 contract plus a
minor league player or two (Josh Reddick, come on down!) in exchange
in a June or July deal.. Then Theo could break out his magic checkbook
and sign him to a 4 year extension. At the worst they would have him
thru 2012.
* He is not a 5 and 10 man so if there are no trade restrictions in
his contract no permission would be needed.
The lineup when everybody gets cranking could be something like this
(or many others-it is fine with me)
1. Lowrie SS
2. Pedroia 2B
3. Gonzalez 1B
4. Youkilis 3B
5. Ethier RF
6. Crawford LF
7. Ortiz DH
8. Ellsbury CF
9. Somebody new C
Lots of left handed hitters, but a very potent lineup.
By the way the Dodger's acquired Ethier when he was a minor leaguer in
the A's organization even up for Milton Bradley.
aren't going to give him away for the likes of JD and Reddick. In fact
I doubt that they would be interested in trading unless it was a
blockbuster in their favor.Getting him would be great but it's a
daydream.
