There are reports that the Tigers are trying sign Justin Verlander to
a 5 year-$75 million contract.
Baseball Prospectus publishes a stat called "Pitcher Abuse Points".
Its somewhat complicated formula that tracks high pitch counts.
Justin Verlander (219899) had almost two and half times as many
"points" as the next pitcher Tim Linceum (94612).
Jimmy Leyland rode this guy hard down the stretch last year trying to
hold off the Twins. (In fact he rode Edwin Jackson and the 19 year
old arm of Rick Porcello pretty hard too. The Verducci effect could
be in play with Porcello).
Of the 45 games, in the American League, that starters threw over 120
pitches Verlander had 11 of them.....including 6 of his last 8
starts. In those 8 starts he averaged 122 pitches.
He threw over 300 (3921) more pitches than the next highest total.
(Hernandez-3618). To put that in some perspective Lester (3391) and
Beckett (3364) were threw over 500 less pitches in 2009 than
Verlander.
Matt Garza was next with 4....Sabathia, Millwood, Meche and another
Tiger Edwin Jackson had 3. No one else had more than 2.
If I were the Tigers I might wait until May and see how he responds.
Yes, Leyland does ride what he views as the hot hand. Gnork hates him,
but he does manage in the Gnork mode. At least Verlander was spared
the post season, which I think tends to take a LOT out of a pitcher.
