This game was a perfect example of why I don't make predictions. Because
I suck at them. I predicted a 7 inning stint giving up 2 runs for
Smoltz. Buzzzzzzzzz, wrongo. Although I got to give him credit for the
nice recovery. Could a 20 + year vet like him really have butterflies?
Well, he'd get two strikes on a guy and, instead of putting him away,
he's feed him a high FB on the outside of the plate, which the guy
would slap to the opposite field --- common enough for a batter in
protect mode. Can't tell if he was missing his spot or getting bad
advice from Tek or overriding Tek. Whatever, he really stunk in the
first inning.
As you said, Smoltz pitcher well after the game was over. He was his
own mop-up man, which is not a pressure situation. I do not understand
all this "encouraged" talk. do they mean that they would be okay with
5 runs in 5 innings before it happened? Or is this silver lining time?
I'm also concerned about Bard. Just b/c it was mop-up time does not
mean he was not lousy. I realize Saito was just as bad, but mostly
Saito has been fine, whereas Bard is a worry of late.
