Those numbers are almost inhuman.  He's a once-in-a-lifetime talent,
and he will rightly command a major-league contract and frankly, I'd
give him one.  Especially if I'm the Red Sox and have the money to
spend.  It'll be interesting to see what Washington does, though.
Maybe they can draft him and then trade his rights to someone else if
they don't like how contract negotiations are going.  Not sure what
the rules are on that.

Frankly, if the Nationals don't somehow come up with the $30-50
million that Boras is commanding for Stephen Strasburg, the Seattle
Mariners will be MORE then happy to shell out the lucrative contract
for him.

The Mariners swept the Oakland A's in a three game series at the very
end of last year

They celebrated the fact that this allowed them to get to the 60 win
mark....unfortunately this also gave them the honor of being the first
team to draft AFTER Strasburg has been picked.- Hide quoted text -

The topic of how top college pitchers fare in the majors sent me off
on a tangent and took me to a website about 'The Golden Spikes Award'.

I'm sure most of you here know that the award is given to the best
Amature in the US.  It doesn'tt have to be a college player...but it
always is.

Anyway.....I was very surprised by the amount of current Red Sox
personnel that have won it.

1994  Jason Varitek
1995  Mark Kotsay
1997  JD Drew

....and....

1983  Dave Magadan

....and....

1980  Terry Francona- Hide quoted text -

Wow Wayback, I actually knew about Francona, he was a great college
player, it is too bad he hurt his knee in the majors, he could have
been a good player. I didn't know of Magadan though he was really
good in the minors, he was supposed to take over at 1B for Hernandez
wit hthe Mets, unfortunately he didn't have enough power or glove work
to really be a top major leaguer, maybe later with more empahsis on
the on base percentage he would be more valued? Varitek of course I
knew, he was said to be the best catcher ever for college, I didn't
know Drew and Kotsay won it though!
