The Sox are still not completely out of it, IMO, but I see this as a
cue for the Skanks to swoop in with a HUGE offer.
I agree and think that's exactly what will happen. I'm sure Cashman
told Boras from the beginning..."Look, Scott, we want Teixeira but we
have other pressing needs to focus our attention on. Just let me
know, when it all comes down to it, what the other offers are, and
give us one shot at it...you won't be disappointed." And Boras said,
"Yes, sir." And the Yanks always appear to be disinterested, but
Boras knows they want him, knows they'll always end up as the top
bidder because Cashman basically told him that. So when the Sox front
office is flying down to Texas to meet with them, while they're in the
air, he calls Cashman and says, "Ok, Brian, the Sox are flying down to
finish this thing...here's the offers on the table." Then Cashman
says, "Ok, Scott, our offer is 10 years, $220 million." Boras relays
that to Theo and Henry, and Henry throws up his hands and says, geez,
if that's on the table, we're out of it.
Cashman does virtually no negotiating, puts in virtually no energy,
but because the Yanks have nearly unlimited resources, he can just
play the game this way and end up with the guy he wants. So CC,
Burnett, Tex, maybe another pitcher, and they still need OF
help....yeah, the Yanks are the Yanks...it's how it goes.
I doubt your fable is correct. NYY can spend big, but they have lots
of limits. And Cashman and NYY in general have terrible relations with
Boras, as evident in the ARod mess. I think Cashman came out and said
he had made no offer as payback to Boras.
I hope you are right, McDuck. I would love to be wrong on this one.
Teixeira makes too much sense for them to not be in the mix. They
have a hole at 1b. They still have more money to spend to even get to
last year's payroll. They have lousy IF defense. Teixeira is the one
guy their archrival, the Red Sox, are targeting. They've already
secured their top two pitching targets. Getting Teixeira would be the
*perfect* move for them, for a host of reasons. It makes very little
sense for them to not be involved at all.
I agree with you completely on the above. I was suggesting previously
that Teix is a better fix for NYY than for Boston, at least short
term. But I think Cashman was honest when he said NYY had not made an
offer and did it to embarrass Boras, who appears to be strtching the
truth a bit (to be kind).- Hide quoted text -

Boras? Stretch the truth? Never!
