Sports Radio 810 WHB in Kansas City reports that the Red Sox have
traded Coco Crisp to the Royals in exchange for Ramon Ramirez.

NOOOooooooo......Sox continue to buy players when their stock is
highest (Lugo, Drew) only to see a return to form...and yes this is a
prediction. You guys will see. Bad move.

He's 27. Why do you assume he has peaked? Who did you think they could
get, Jake Peavy? Sweet deal for a guy, who some in these parts thought they
should pay someone to take off our hands...and had ZERO value last year.
The salary trade off is huge too. This also gives them millions to work
with elsewhere. This is precisely a case of the Red Sox selling high.

The trade for Ramon Ramirez is a great trade. He had a super year in
2008. Yes, way up from 2007, so there is a concern that we got him at
peak, but a minor concern IMHO. He can be half as good as in 2008 and
still be a major addition. And he's young, hitting his prime years, so
no reason to believe he will revert to 2007 form. And he fills a
really big need for the RS.

Loot at some of Ramon's numbers. Of course ther is the great ERA of
2.64. But ERA for relievers is not a full story, to be sure. Here are
some telling numbers:

SO/9 BB/9 SO/BB
8.79 3.89 2.26

Nice if he can cut back a little on the BBs, but otherwise stellar.
For comparison, here are the same numbers for the great Jon Lester,
Oki, and Jon Paps in 2008:

Lester 6.50 2.82 2.30
Okajima 8.71 3.34 2.61
Paps 10.00 1.04 9.63

Paps is other world, but we knew that. Ramon holds his own with the
next tier. I have not been as excited about a BP acquision since we
got Byung-Hyun Kim for a castoff. By the way, here are Kim's pretty
good numbers for the RS in 2003:

7.83 2.04 3.83

I was a fan of Coco, and I'm glad he gets to play every day. He is too
good and too young not to have that chance. He was a real bust for the
RS in 2007 but was a really key player in 2008, who gave the RS a
decent chance at making the WS when Ellsbury slumped badly. Yes, he
has a noodle arm, but the rest of his game is good. and he played hurt
a lot and never complained. Fine teammate, etc. etc. I argued early in
the hot stove season for keeping him as the 4th outfielder,
notwithstandimg my agreewith with Gnork that he was a big negative in
2007. I think the result was a good one --- he was surely one of the
top 4th outfielders in the AL.

And, of course, it is great to have a Ramirez on the team again.
