Might Boston make a trade with Texas for that guy Gerald Laird? He
seems like a pretty decent hitter. He wont be able to match Varitek
in anyway in terms of game calling but he wouldnt be a bad fit I
think.
They could call pitches from the bench. It's not unheard of.
It's more than just what pitches are called. A catcher like Tek has
prepared himself and the pitcher for each batter prior to the game and
the mutual trust between them results in a strategy that works better.
Also the better mental state for the pitcher probably helps him
execute his pitches.
You have to trade off the runs not scored because of Varitek's weak
bat vs. the runs not scored by the other team because of better
pitching.

Given the runs the Rays scored in the ALCS and did NOT score in the
Series, you gotta wonder just how good he is.
Let's see....
caught more no-hitters than any other catcher in history
voted into the all-star game by his peers.
was the captain of two WS teams
said by a rival manager to be the one player he wishes the Sox didn't
have....not Manny, not Ortiz....Tek.
The real wonder is how anyone can question his value.- Hide quoted text -

It's a nice resume if you're applying for the HOF but how does any of
it help the 2009 Red Sox?
His offense is almost gone...especially batting left handed. He
can't throw anyone out.
He has a great attitude....I hope when his career is through he stays
connected to the team in some capacity....but his days productivity on
the field are over.
They say that the athlete is always the last to know his skills are
gone.....sometimes the fans are even behind that curve.
