Put them together, and you've got "Swindle Assister" (yep, that's
about right...)
Once upon a time in our once proud nation the captains of industry
noticed that the workers were starting to think that they actually
should have some rights. The workers started to demand things like a
living wage and safe working conditions. Needless to say, the captains
were not amused. They called their errand boys in Washington, and
expected that the rabble would be quelled. However, the workers by
this time had organized enough that they actually had a voice in
Washington too. Soon, regulations forced the captains to begrudgingly
behave like human beings. To their surprise, their profits continued
to soar. However, the profits weren't quite as high as they might
have been had they been allowed to continue pillage at will. While the
now more equitable distribution of wealth in the country was creating
unforseen opportunities for growth, there was still the nagging
feeling that their power and control of the government was withering
away, and before you know it the rabble might actually be running the
country.
So steps had to be taken.
They quickly realized that if they called their party the party of
the rich, by the rich, and exclusively for the rich, they would
probably run into difficulty at election time, so they decided to
disguise their true intent as much as possible. They called themselves
the party of the patriotic, the party of the brave, the party of the
independent, the party of the religious, the party of the family...
anything but the truth. They had to appeal to the stupid. They had
to appeal to the fearful. But they realized that wouldn't be enough.
Then they decided to pursue the truly ignorant. They went after the
hateful, the xenophobic, and finally they went after what would become
their biggest prize: the greedy. They chose divisive issues which
would guarantee them certain voters, regardless of the party's other
stances. They promised the gun nuts that their guns would be safe,
they promised the abortion opponents that abortions would soon be
illegal, they promised the immigration opponents that those filthy
Europeans would no longer be taking their jobs. The issues were
slightly different back then, but the playbook was the same. They
wrapped themselves in flags and apple pies and managed to con enough
people every so often to win the Whitehouse. But they never lost
sight of their true overriding intent: the continued corporate
control of the government.
They started a cycle of boom and bust, where they would stand back
and allow the Democrats to control the show until the prosperity of
the rising tide once again threatened the corporate aristocracy. Then
they would unleash a campaign stressing how terrible government is
promising huge tax relief. When they seized power, they did indeed
shrink taxes. First and foremost for the rich of course, but they
eventually let that relief trickle down to the masses via the
equivalent of today's $600. "stimulus" checks. They usually managed
to control at least one branch of government which was enough to
prevent the long term loss of their control. Once, they managed to
control all three branches of government at the same time. In the
1920's the economy was growing by leaps and bounds, as the Democratic
rising tide created a wave of incredible economic expansion. So they
trotted out the promises of lower taxes, and the flags, and the apple
pies and wrested control of all three branches of government. "Time
to get this ship back on the right course". They then proceeded to
gut the government. They gutted financial regulation. They gave back
as much as was possible to the rich, in an attempt to assure future
control for generations to come. The pigs were allowed to stay at the
trough as long as they liked, so of course they ate until they
exploded.
The result was The Great Depression.
History would repeat itself some 70 years later when 8 years of
Democratic control resulted in unprecedented rising tide prosperity
once again threatening the rule of the rich. Out came the flags, and
the promises of lower taxes, and throw in a little "contract with
America" and Presto ! they managed to seize control of all three
branches once again.
Again, they took steps to assure future control. They drastically
reduced taxation of the rich, and drastically reduced financial
regulation, and gutted the federal government as much as possible. So
the pigs were once again back at the trough.
Unfortunately, they're about to explode again.
Can't happen soon enough!!
