Varitek was on a hot streak before he fell in this hole.

Lugo's is just a small slump at the moment.

Youkilis was probably the team MVP before his 1-19.

Cora has 30 at bats on the season. He began 9-15, since then 1-15.

Just when I thought Crisp might have a decent year this happens. I was
hoping they would trade him while he was doing well despite Francona's
plaintive pleadings of how much he would like to keep Coco. Crisp
overall is now down to .256  .295  .397. His BA and OBP are worse than

his prior two lousy years in Boston. Also last year's great diving
catches have been replaced by this year's diving close misses. I think
that is mostly happenstance. Last year he had an amazing number of
balls that with his good speed and effort just barely were catchable.
This year he still has the good speed and effort, but the balls are
hit just a teensy bit out of his reach. I expected that to happen to
some extent, because it was not reasonable to figure on so many great
catches in back to back seasons.

Pedroia needs to get it going again. His defense has been gold glove
quality and many of his hits have come in very clutch spots. But now
he needs to consistently start cranking out hits, draw walks, and get
his numbers up around last year's.



Without checking the stats, it seems like the "setting the table" guys
aren't getting on base. Often Papi comes up to bat with nobody on--
although Ellsbury was better last night.
Also, a lot a swinging at the first pitch, instead of drawing walks
and running up the pitch count. Which leaves opposing starters out
longer, and less use of their bullpens which the Sox often have
success against.

There's also a dramatic difference between home and away hitting. The
hitting woes are more apparent right now since they're on this long trip.
