Why aren't the Red Sox scoring more runs?

Overall the offense has been pathetic for quite a while. Not what you
should expect or receive from a team with so many traditionally good
hitters. Why? The simple answer is too many hitters are slumping at the
same time. I think managerial decisions also have hurt. Let's look at
the current major offenders in order of lowest BA's.

Jason Varitek 0-18
Julio Lugo 0- 8
Kevin Youkilis 1-19 .053
Kevin Cash 1-15 .067
Alex Cora 1-15 .067
Coco Crisp 2-29 .069 (also 0-18)
Dustin Pedroia 4-33 .121

Varitek was on a hot streak before he fell in this hole.

Lugo's is just a small slump at the moment.

Youkilis was probably the team MVP before his 1-19.

The clock struck midnight for Cinderella Cash.

Cora has 30 at bats on the season. He began 9-15, since then 1-15.

Just when I thought Crisp might have a decent year this happens. I was
hoping they would trade him while he was doing well despite Francona's
plaintive pleadings of how much he would like to keep Coco. Crisp
overall is now down to .256 .295 .397. His BA and OBP are worse than
his prior two lousy years in Boston. Also last year's great diving
catches have been replaced by this year's diving close misses. I think
that is mostly happenstance. Last year he had an amazing number of
balls that with his good speed and effort just barely were catchable.
This year he still has the good speed and effort, but the balls are
hit just a teensy bit out of his reach. I expected that to happen to
some extent, because it was not reasonable to figure on so many great
catches in back to back seasons.

Pedroia needs to get it going again. His defense has been gold glove
quality and many of his hits have come in very clutch spots. But now
he needs to consistently start cranking out hits, draw walks, and get
his numbers up around last year's.
