Gae 57---May 31st.---Don's grade/thoughts !!!

Not sure I cared for TCs riff comparing the Sox latest problems the
Hitch*** movie titles. It was more creepy than funny.

I know they say Masterson is raw and still needs seasoning, but assuming
he's the starter who replaces Dice-K for his next start and he again
pitches well it could be tough for the Sox to send him back down again.

Kind of an excruciating bottom of the 6th. with 2 strike outs to start
the inning, followed by 3 straight walks only to have Josh end it with a
third strike out. And by reading his lips as he left the mound it was
clear that he was not amused.

I know there's a lot of talk here today about the merits of Terry trying
to squeeze a run home in the first inning and while I share that concern
I prefer to concentrate on the good things I saw. And that is how he
handled the bull pen especially in the early stages of the game. While
his use of Oki for 2 innings probably loses him for tonightt it, and
using Hansen for 1.2 innings indicates that Terry was considering the
chances of a long game. My one minor question here is why Timlin for the
12th. instead of Aardsma? I suppose that could be that he'd have
fathered Aardsma go 2 innings had the game continued longer than it did.

Figures that the first game back from the west coast would go extra
innings. Due to the good pitching of the opponents out west making
some of those games shorter than usual, this game almost felt like a
west coast game. The other "except" being of course that they won this
one.

There certainly is a comfort level with Baltimore isn't there? It's hard
not to get the sense that if you give them enough chances they are more
than capable of hanging themselves. Hence the 3 error 13th. inning.

So one of the unlikely to be won contests, that being the CVS 'if the
Sox get a save in extra innings' (A save in extra innings can only be
gotten in a road game.) game actually is won by someone. This one
still isn't as unlikely as several of the radio side games.

This game's +s and -s and STAR and comments:
Starting pitching:
Beckett gets a " + " for the 6 innings giving up 2 runs. Might have

certainly costing his a chance to go 7 innings.
Relief pitching:
Okajima and Hansen each get a " + " for the 2 and 1.2 innings
respectively of scoreless relief.
Offense:
Lowell is the STAR for driving in what proved eventually to be the game
winning run to go along with his other 2 hits and RBI.
Ellsbury gets a " + " for the 3 hits, run scored and one game franchise
record 3 stolen bases.
Pedroia gets a " - " for the 4 LOB 0 fer 5 night,
