Met with the neurosurgeon today and while he has confer with one more
doctor it looks like I AM indeed a good candidate for the Deep Brain
Stimulation surgery. This is how he explained the procedure to me. I'll
go to the hospital the morning of the surgery, they'll shave at least
part of my skull (I might go for the whole thing shaved even if it's not
required. Might be a neat and sexy look.) and make a 5 inch insertion in
my scalp and a dime sized hole in the left side of my skull . I'm only
having the right side done since the left is effectively dead from the
stroke (Left brain affects right side.) Into this they'll insert a
spaghetti like electrode (The soft nature of it was important to me
because I worried about a hard substance getting moved around should I
bump my head.) with traces of metal in it deep into my brain. The hole
in my skull will be securely capped. A wire from the electrode will
run, under my skin to my left shoulder. That's phase one. It sounds like
it will take 4 to 5 hours. I'll be awake for this since they'll need to
ask me questions to be sure they're not hitting the wrong spot. Assuming
all goes well they'll keep me over night for observation then I'll go
home. Dr. Roberts advises someone stay with me for the next week in case
problems arise. I'll go back a week later to have the unit put in. Then
home again. 2 weeks for healing then stitches removed and the unit is
activated. If all goes according to plan there is a 65 % (I'd have
preferred a higher number there.) chance that the charge will give me
considerable improvement in both the rigidity and tremors. Almost no
chance of ill effects. I gather results will be almost instantaneous. He
couldn't say how long the effects will last. That's tied to the rate of
speed that the condition advances. I'd have thought they'd want to
observe me dor a while but apparently not since I can again come home
that day. So, again assuming no complications, after 1 night in a
hospital I should be coming home in much better shape than I left.
Modern medicine is a thing of wonder isn't it? I even have some hope
that I'll be able to walk a bit again. I'm not talking distance here,
just around the apartment would be great. And I know these poor
atrophied legs of mine will need strengthening, just send me a good and
sexy PT and watch how hard I'll work. The last thing I asked Dr.
Roberts , who is a Yankee fan, is that he promise not to turn me into a
Yankee fan. With timing that the greatest comedians alive would
envy, this man who I'd been told had no sense of humor, reaches into his
pocket and pulls out a Yankee do rag that doctors wear in surgery and
said, "Well now that you mention it......". We then talked baseball for
several minutes during which I pointed out that his team has not won a
WS in this millennium. I didn't belabor the point though because this
man IS going to be cutting into my head after all. It sounds like I'll
have magnetic scanner concerns for the rest of my life but I'll deal
with that. So with luck and a good surgeon (He had a loose hand shake, a
sign of "soft" hands I'd think. A goods thing for a cutter?, I'll be
doing bowling work and Sox grades for a while yet. And who knows M,
maybe THAT part of my life ISN'T quite over yet either. Hell, maybe I'll
become famous out of this. For me to survive the last 10 years and
apparently to have more ahead of me I'm becoming convinced that whatever
powers control this universe have a purpose in mind for me. So I expect
to hear from Dr. Roberts in the next couple of days at which point I
expect to schedule this surgery. My first intent had been to wait
until after the bowling banquet on May 10th. (Which is also the 10th.
anniversary of my being a stroke survivor.) but with no recovery time
needed if they can do it tomorrow (AndvIcan find a ride.), I'll be
there. More likely is around 2 months though. Does that sound like what
you understood Chris? And does it jibe withyourevperience b Marjorie? Oh
yeah, got a pound of bison meat on the way home and made 2 quarter pound
cheese buffalo burgers which I'm greatly enjoying for supper as I type
this. Sorry for the length and detail but I'm understandably excited
tonight and needed to share as well as inform.

Good luck, Don.
Hope to read your grades for a while yet.
