Re: My latest medical update !!!

Just got back from Dartmouth where the neurologists I saw are reasonably
sure that my Parkinsons is typical and not related to the stroke. This
is good since it makes me a better candidate for the Deep Brain
Surgery. The major problem is that the doctor can't be as certain about
it as he'd like because one of his major diagnostic measures is whether
both the left and right are similarly affected. The next step is to see
what the neurosurgeon thinks about it when we see him next week. As we
were leaving the hospital I started to 'shut down' and stayed that way
pretty badly for about 3 hours no matter how much of the med I took.
We had lunch at Pizza Hut and though the shut down was pretty bad I was
able to eat my meal. Because I was still shut down Chris suggested we
delay our planned BJs stop until next week. I convinced him to try it
and we'd been there about 30 minutes when the meds kicked it. At this
point I transferred from my chair to one of their powered carts. I Then
unexpectedly I shut down again which rarely happens when I'm as
medicated as I was today. This one was not as bad as the other one and
only lasted about 45 minutes. As I'm thinking after the day I put Chris
through I wouldn't blame him if he never wanted to take me any where
again, he brings up the subject of us getting to a Sox game this
summer. Boy is this "kid" special or what? Anyone who ever ays an
unkind word about that brother of mine will have me to answer to and I
WILL find a way to mess you up. So there it is. Some good news
concerning the surgery (I still can't believe I'm hoping for brain
surgery. From a doctor who is a Yankee fan of all things), some bad news
in regards to the continued frequency and unpredictability of the down
times, and some good news in that we got through a very tough day in one
piece. Oh, and I came home with half a dozen jars of queen sized olives
among several BJs goodies.

New sig line
pending a
brain storm!!!

Don,
I'll be starting my neurology residency next summer. Anything you can tell me about your subjective experiences with DBS (and I mean everything, from how it was discussed with you, questions you wish you'd had answered right away, who you needed to talk to, what you're worried/concerned about, right up through what it feels like as a patient when (if) you actually have the device implanted and activated) would be appreciated-- feel free to use private email. I'll be dealing with many patients who have problems like yours and of course want to be the best doc I can for them.

Thanks, and best of luck to you. It sounds like you've got a good support system!
