I've always been fascinated by the prospect of being part of a small
group that survives an event that kills off the vast majority of
mankind. Let's assume that buildings survive, that food supplies

band. All that's left of society are similar small bands. What are the
first things you do to help your band survive as long as possible?
The first question to ask is how the planet got in this situation.

If it was a nuclear war you'd be stuck in the fall out shelter for the rest of your life. You wouldn't be able to leave the
shelter, the radiation would kill you. And then there is
the nuclear winter.

All food outside of the shelter would be contaminated.

Assume no readily available electricity. I'd start with raiding drug
stores of any and all medications and other medical supplies.
And you'd be dead before you got to the drug store.

Next I'd
hit every food supply outlet and grab up every bit of non-perishable
food item I could find.
Which would be all contaminated.

I'm assuming cars will run,
at least as long as gas and oil can be found and reached, so I'd make
sure to hit car dealers and parts stores.
The car won't run. Nobody would alive long enough to deliver the
gas, they'd be stuck in the fall out shelter.

You're adding parameters to his scenario.
What if everybody died of a cold? Food would be fine. There'd be a lot of bodies around, but a good, hot summer would take care of that. And since the tractors would run, they'd make excellent fertilizer for the new society.

No matter what you did, you wouldn't need lawyers, priests or politicians. That's a hell of a good start on a real civilization.
