Also, Omar Minaya twice turned down trades for Ortiz as the
Expos' GM: once for Livan Hernandez in 2002, and once in early
2003, when the Red Sox didn't know what to do with Ortiz, and
were looking for minor leaguers. This was in a Daily News article
a few months ago.

Wow, I never heard that. Theo has been very lucky with the deals he
didn't make.

Yeah, I wish I remembered the link or date of the article. IIRC, in
2002, the Twins' GM told Omar that they were planning to non-tender
Ortiz after the season, but knew that the Expos were looking to move
Livan, so maybe they'd be a good match. But it never ended up working
out. Then in 2003, Ortiz was on the bench and I believe his agent
complained, and Epstein wanted to do right by the player, so he called
Omar. Forgot who the Red Sox were looking for, but it wasn't anyone
too spectacular.

It's amazing how close Ortiz came to being just another average papi,
instead of the Biggest Papi in the world!

Is this the article you're referring to? (Bill Madden, NY Daily News,
October 28, 2007)
