Wow, I never heard that. Theo has been very lucky with the deals he
didn't make.
Yeah, I wish I remembered the link or date of the article. IIRC, in
2002, the Twins' GM told Omar that they were planning to non-tender
Ortiz after the season, but knew that the Expos were looking to move
Livan, so maybe they'd be a good match. But it never ended up working
out. Then in 2003, Ortiz was on the bench and I believe his agent
complained, and Epstein wanted to do right by the player, so he called
Omar. Forgot who the Red Sox were looking for, but it wasn't anyone
too spectacular.
It's amazing how close Ortiz came to being just another average papi,
instead of the Biggest Papi in the world!
