Re: What's what with the HD change in 2009 ???

You think that $2000 is affordable? I have three television sets in my house
with cable. I'm totally satisfied with the picture. My understanding is that
I will have to
upgrade to a new television to be able to receive HD or I may lose the
signal entirely. That's crazy.

There's all this talk that in Feb. of 2009 some TVs may not work when
the system goes to High Def. Can someone explain just what this means?
Is it older sets that won't work? If so how old? How can you tell if
you need to get a new set? Will we have to get new sets or a converter
box? If the box is it a one time buy or would it have to be rented on a
monthly basis? So many questions. Hopefully some good answers?

HD is a way of getting people to buy new televisions when they are
already happy with the one they have. What a waste of money.

I guess it depends on how satisfied you are with the picture. I've had HD
for several years (satellite), and the difference in picture quality is
quite enough for me to accept it wholeheartedly. Not to mention more real
estate for baseball and soccer. I sometimes pop up an SD feed side-by-side
with an HD feed (Picture-in-Picture), and there's no question the HD feed
is MUCH better.

And HD sets aren't all that expensive now. You can get a good 1080p 40"+
set (plasma or lcd) for less than $2000 (much less, in some cases). The
price comparison is awkward, however, because it's not easy to find a 42"
or larger CRT.
