Believe or don't believe -- it's obviously up to the individual
poster (or the collective posting from a single poster's
username, as the case may be) -- but I don't think a modicum
of incredulity is all that inappropriate here, though others
may see it differently. And I don't see a problem with saying
that pictures might help address some of that credulity,
although I also understand why people would be uncomfortable
with posting them (or links to them).
And, of course, pictures lie. We all have access to pictures of cats,
pictures of pretty girls, etc. If I were inclined to doubt the true
existence of a poster, I would not change my level of doubt because
the alleged person posted a pic of a cat. Now, a link to a NYTimes
column announcing the wedding of Bismo and Christina would assuage
some doubts, but the absense of that link is not evidence of anything
(as you correctly explained in your discussion of the possible
existence of God).
I still don't understand the need for Bob to reopen a thread that had
been dead for nearly a month, in order to snipe at me (not to mention
my fiance). I found it gratuitous and uncalled for. But of course,
I've apologized a dozen different times to Bob, steadfastly made sure
to keep my posts on-topic and newsworthy (which frankly, not a lot of
other regulars can say), and pointed out the admittedly few factual
errors or debatable opinions in his posts, yet get no response back.
I feel that Bob's treatment of me is unfair, but I'm tired of
groveling to him as if he's some kind of moderator or great authority
whose blessing I (or anyone else) need. And that doesn't even get
into the offensive idea that I have to show documentation to the man,
as if it's some kind of police state.
He is a brilliant and witty man, and he knows his baseball, even if I
disagree about what I feel is his overreliance on "Player A/Player B"
(which can also be used, of course, to make Bronson Arroyo look like
Greg Maddux, Donnie Sadler look like Nomar Garciaparra, and Rafael
Ramirez seem identical to Marty Marion) and OPS+, without looking at
other stats or explanations for a player's performance, and also
cherry picking some players stats (Ellsbury minus the hot streak) but
not others (leaving Coco's similar streak in).
But I can't help but feel that a poster I once worshipped has turned
into "Bob Snob," judging and sniping at me, yet refusing to give me
any chance to redeem myself, or listening to any constructive
criticisms of his arguments. It is a loss to me, and to the NG too,
and it makes me feel so sad.
So Bob, for the last time, I want to reach out to you and start over.
Please accept my apology for the shenanigans I engaged in that so
offended you and others, and judge me by the renewed focus I've given
to posting in this group. I would like once again for us to engage in
spirited but friendly debates, hopefully furthering ours and
everyone's knowledge of the team and sport. Please Bob, I beg your
forgiveness. It is a new year and let us make a new start.
Regardless of your answer, I wish you no ill will, and may God bless
you and all your loved ones now and forevermore.
