Another detail Cobb can't seem to get a handle on...Ellsbury, Lester and even Buchholz are no longer prospects. They are ready for prime time.
They might be ready for prime time but how they will perform in the
long run is far from clear. Each has demonstrated flashes of
brilliance but none have played enough to know how they will pan out
over time.
Buccholz may even be injury prone as evidence by the Sox need to
sideline him after a few appearances due to some musculoskeletal
problem. Maybe they were being cautious and maybe it is a portend of
things to come. And Lester is a cancer survivor who must be considered
to be a somewhat above average health risk although his prognosis is
likely excellent in terms of beating the cancer.
I think it was that he was on an inning count for the season as well as a pitch count for a game because he was a young pitcher and he had reached the inning count limit. Overused young pitchers often become injury prone due to the overuse and that is what they were trying to prevent.
I think this is exactly right. They were becoming very tempted to use him more and at the very first hint of ANY fatigue, pulled the plug in order to make a horrible mistake. He is no more hurt than Joba was for the Yanks. Any team with such valuable young assets are going to bend over backwards to prevent damaging them. It's wise to take the temptation out of the hands of a manager who may or may not last long enough to reap the long term benefit of the player.
As for Ellsbury...it's much more of a crap shoot with pitchers as to how good they'll become. I think we have enough signs that it's only a question of if Jacoby will be a very good or a *great* player...barring injury of course. It's only my opinion (and most of baseball apparently) but I think there is plenty of evidence to support that at this point. I seldom believe in making predictions...this is one I'm very comfortable making.
