Erasing more lines in the sand. I'm telling you, this is going to be
entertaining.
From the New York Daily News (Dec. 8): While Hank Steinbrenner
acknowledges that he hasn't slammed the door on a potential
blockbuster deal for Johan Santana, several possible trade chips the
Twins might want are "as close to untouchable as you get," the
Yankees' senior vice president said Friday. Joba Chamberlain already
had been declared off-limits by the Yankees and Steinbrenner Friday
named Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Melky Cabrera and Robinson Cano as
"the very best of our young players. "We're all still very much
pleased with what we've got," Steinbrenner added in a telephone
interview. "As far as the door (to a Santana deal) being open, who
knows? At this point, Chamberlain, Hughes, Kennedy, Cabrera and Cano,
they're as close to untouchable as you get. "The only reason I made a
point of a deadline on Santana was that I didn't want to get caught up
in the circus of the winter meetings. The purpose of that deadline was
trying to get something done before the winter meetings."
Melky untouchable? They are touting him right now. At least Hank explained
himself, we all knew he was full of it when he put a deadline out there.
