I know some here will find this self indulgent on my part and will be
annoyed by it. Fine, your right. I also know there are those here who
have an honest interest in my situation. This post is to keep my
friends
here up to date. As you guys may know I have Parkinsons. This is a
condition in which the brain does not produce enough eldopa, which is
an
adrenaline chemical. The result of this lack is a weakness and
slowness
that makes doing normal things almost impossible and time consuming.
One example is that when I'm in what I call a "Parkinsons" shut down
it
takes me up to 45 minutes to get dressed. This normally takes about 10
minutes. There's no cure for Parkinsons but there are several drugs
that treat it. Unfortunately these drugs are nearly impossible to
regulate. The result is often that too much eldopa is produced. This
results in the tremors most people think is from Parkinsons. These
tremors eventually get bad enough so as to have a similar loss of
function that the Parkinsons initially cause. There is a recent
surgery
to treat this problem. It's called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) It
involves implanting electrodes up to 6 inches into the brain. These
are
connected to a unit that, when activated, sends a signal to the brain
which regulates the eldopa and stops the tremors cold. Thursday I go
to
Dartmouth for my initial visit to see if I'm a good candidate for this
procedure. I am of course worried about letting someone dig around
inside my brain (I know it's there. I've seen the pictures.), but the
alternative of the shaking getting worse and my losing functional
ability frightens me much more. So if they tell me I'm a good
candidate
I am almost certainly going to do this. It will likely mean another
nursing home stay while I heal, though I suspect not nearly as long as
it took for the toe amputation to heal. (There HAS to be a joke in
there some where.) I WILL NOT let this happen before Christmas, but
after that it will likely be done as soon as possible. Hell, gotta be
sure I can do the grades next season.

Don't think for a second that is self-indulgent. I'm sure we all (that
know
and appreciate your comments and camaraderie) are rooting for the
success of
this procedure. Keep us updated and get ready for next season.
All except for your good friend Richard Carlisle (sp).
Who?
Tricky Dicky claims to be a Doctor (I suppose a witch doctor could apply).
You don't think Dicky is on staff.........
Run, Don, run.
