I look at the pros and cons of Santana/Haren and FWIW I think Haren
will end up costing more in prospects not less as some have said. With
that said I'm fine if we can grab either without losing too much. I
hate to lose Ellsbury or Bucholz but let's remember we just won a
world series without too big contributions throughout the year from
either. If we add Johan or Haren to that team they could win 100
games. In any event my point is Santana's contract demands will likely
scare off the Dodgers, Angels, Tigers and even Tampa or KC. Whereas
with Haren the real $$$ is much cheaper and you get him for 3 years. I
think there is a much bigger chance of the Dodgers and others getting
involved in THAT process and outbidding (prospect wise) others. The
Yankees have a few nice arms and the loot but all in all their farm
and ours are close and Santana could be just who'll blink first. Teams
like the Angels and Dodgers are at another level and they could trump
any deal we could offer for Haren.
Ellsbury made an enormous contribution to this team in the final month. There is a very good chance this team would not have won without him. Buchholz obviously made a lesser impact, but I for one am willing to gamble that he is the next big thing around here. You are right about one thing. This team won without a big contribution from him. It also did it without Dan Haren and his 15 wins. I'll roll the dice gladly that Buchholz is able to duplicate that.
