Edes isn't up to date; the rankings were released yesterday, published
today. Gagne is a "B".
Here's the AL list:

Of course, lost in all of this discussion is the fact that we would
have to offer him arbitration in order to be able to get those draft
picks.
What if nobody takes him ?
Yikes.
Hold on. I don't know how it works exactly...does his salary get based
on
the 9.8 M after bonuses? Or the base salary of 6? Can they offer 80%
of
6
million and offer incentives again? They have taken flyers on lesser
pitchers for more. Is it THAT big a risk? Given a fresh start...a
clean
slate...and some work on whatever his mechanical problems may have been.
I
don't know that it is so outlandish at all.
It's off the $9.8M. The lowest they could offer is $7.8M. That's
probably more than Gagne could get as a free agent, but he probably
doesn't want to come back. It's like Foulke last year, though for a
little more money, and last year they offered arbitration. I think
they'll do it again. Worse comes to worst, they'll take him back at
$7.8M and dump him in spring training. Arbitration contracts aren't
guaranteed until a certain date, so they could cut him before that and
only owe 45 days termination pay (about 25% of the salary, which comes
to just under $2M).
So in summary, here are the choices:
1. Offer arbitration. Get a pick if he signs somewhere else. Risk
that he accepts, which means you're stuck with him for $7.8M or have
to buy him out at $2M.
2. Don't offer arbitration. No risk in getting stuck with the money,
but no draft pick.
I think they'll bet $2M that someone else signs him. They love draft
picks.
-Jason for Bismo.
Doubt they'll offer him arbitration. He will have trouble getting Boras
money after his shaky stay in Boston.
Why? If he hates Boston so much and knows he has no chance to close
there, then he won't accept arbitration, and Boston will get a free
draft pick, no matter how small his contract with another team is.
The draft pick is worth the $2 million risk if Gagne accepts
arbitration. Boston's been plucking players like Ellsbury and
Buchholz with some of these extra picks lately.
-TexasT for Bismo.
I don't know if they want to pay $2mil for a B pick.
