Except that he happens to be a very tradable commodity. It also isn't fair
to a player in his prime, with his talent. They traded lesser players (like
Dave Roberts) not just to keep them happy, but to show other players in the
game, that they can expect to be treated fairly. The Twins will be in the
market as well. If they can leverage him, with other talent, to get
Santana, they must try. I'm not in the camp that would give up Buchholz
however. I hate to even say it, but Lester's stock just rose considerably.
Wouldn't you at least consider Coco and Lester (perhaps a low prospect) for
Santana? Might not even get it done...but it would certainly be worthy of
consideration.-
Zero chance that Coco+Lester+prospect = Santana. But if the Twins
offered it, of *course* you'd take it if you are the Red Sox.
Would you add Buchholz?
Dano, that's exactly the combination that Sean MacAdam at the ProJo
suggested (just as food for thought) in some article.
There's some logic to it, i.e. you'd be getting back the best LH starting
pitcher in the game who's a constant threat to win a Cy Young, who is
also in the prime of his career, in exchange for:
a) Coco, a player that the Sox are looking to move anyway,
b) Lester, a very nice LH starter, but probably not really much more
than a #2 (although I could be wrong),
c) Buchholz, an outstanding prospect, but still just a prospect
I can see the logic behind this suggested deal, assuming (of course)
that a negotiating window is allowed. You get an awesome LP
starter to go with Beckett and DiceK, and you're reloaded to
continue a strong run at the WS for the immediate future.
OTOH, you're giving up a couple of very affordable young
starters, one a RHP prospect, and the other a LHP just a step
above a prospect.
I guess it depends on whether you really want to get stronger for
immediate future, or whether you want to have to accept that it
might take a year or so for the youngsters to develop.
Also, I suppose that a couple of lesser factors might be:
a) whether the Sox get Arod, since signing Santana will also
be very expensive (probably over $20M/yr),
b) getting Santana would keep him away from the Yankees,
who if he reaches the FA market, you just KNOW that the
Yanks will open their bank accounts big time to go after
Santana.
Santana is one hell of a pitcher, but I'm just not sure that
I'd want to give up TWO of our projected starters for
next year just to get him.
I'd add that Lester was once considered the better prospect between he and Papelbon. His progress this year was outstanding. However...if a deal were worked out with Santana, before any trade...I would be more interested. I really don't think that will happen.
