Would you add Buchholz?

Very, very interesting question. I love the young guys, but if
Buchholz ever, at some point in his career, amounts to even 80% of
what Santana already is, then the Red Sox would be thrilled. You just
do not see dominant left-handed starting pitchers of this caliber very
often. Before Santana, the previous great was Randy Johnson. Before
him........?? Put it this way, nobody comes to mind.

Forget Santana's W-L record (which is still sterling): the guy is a
power-pitching strikeout machine who keeps guys off base and prevents
them from scoring. He strikes fear into the hearts of the other
team. Imagine if the Sox got Santana and if Dice-K made even half the
leap Beckett made from year 1 in Boston to year 2. Your top three
would be Beckett, Santana, and the vastly improved Dice-K. That's
ridiculously good. Add in Wakefield, and then the Sox could throw in
a guy like Bowden as a MLB project...with that rotation, he could
really learn in a relatively stress-free environment. And when the
team hit the postseason......wowza.

So, as much as it would pain me, I think I'd do it. Only because
Santana is such a rare commodity. Young phenoms that *could* blossom
into something great come along fairly regularly - and most don't pan
out.

I agree with that. But as I've pointed out...he is going to be a free agent next year. Until he becomes re-signed or extended he is a one year player. And his next contract might only be surpassed by A-Rod's next.
