OK. You do that. How much do you suppose Johan will cost you the following
year as a free agent?-
He would have already signed through at least 2011. I wouldn't make
the trade if I couldn't get the extension signed. How much would I be
willing to pay? I dunno. $20 million per? I tell ya one thing: If
I "had" to get Santana, I'd try to do it this way rather than waiting
for him to be a free agent, since it's quite possible that someone
else would trade for and extend him.
Well I'd have to say that's a pretty big element you are assuming without mention. Personally I'm thinking the only way he gets traded is IF he decides to opt for free agency and the ensuing bidding war for his services. Otherwise Minnesota re-signs him themselves.
So you now think Mike Lowell is worth something like 12-15 mil, yet you think Santana would sign for 20? I think that's extremely low. THAT is why I'd rather keep my young pitchers. The value is increasing so exponentially, that it makes them so much more valuable...to have under the team's control. Keep them both!
