The Indians have lost 4-3 to the Royals.
And the Red Sox have clinched Best Record.
That's excellent! Who could complain about home field throughout the
playoffs, and getting to set the first round schedule--whether it's to
help us, hurt the Yanks, or some combination of the above. Great job,
and a special thank you to the Royals of Kansas City.

The Sox have already announced that they're going to take the longer
schedule, which I suppose means that the Indians get the shorter
schedule ... which I suppose in turn, ends up helping the Yanks,
since it would mean that the Indians wouldn't be able to trot their
2 aces out there twice in the series on full rest.
Still, the Sox gotta do what's good for them, and let the other series
take care of itself.
I think that it's pretty safe to guess that Beckett will pitch game #1.
I think that the real question is who will pitch game #2. I'm thinking
that since Schilling is being skipped tomorrow, that he'll get the game
#2 start. (Otherwise, he'd end up with probably too much rest.) And
if this is true, then one assumes that DiceK gets the game #3 start,
and I think that the extra rest will do the Dice-man plenty of good.
Right now, it seems that whenever they can get him an extra day or 2
or rest, DiceK responds very well.
Wouldn't it really be something if Schilling could win a 2nd WS with
the Sox in what may likely be his last season with the team, to add to
the one he won in his first season with the team? Who would have
imagined what this guy would do to help the Red Sox win one and
have such a great chance at winning a second?
I'm not sure I see an advantage in either schedule for the ALDS. I
think I would refer the Yankees and Cleveland have the schedule that
would force them to use their top two starters in games 4 & 5 of the
ALDS.
Facing Cleveland with Sabathia and Carmona unavailable or the Yankees
without Wang and Pettite seems to be a bigger advantage than anything
you could get out of the first series.
That is an interesting take on it that I've considered. However, I think
that in the end, the safer way to look at it is just for the Sox to pick the
schedule that they feel helps them out the most in the here and now,
and let the future and the other series take care of itself.
