All you Wakefield bashers. Where are you tonight? Still want to give himthem.
his walking papers?
I don't usually crow after something like this...but...I'm so sick of the
short memories and disappearing acts of certain Neg Nels, as Don calls
This is exactly why Wake is still around after all these years. And I'm
damn glad he is.
All in all he is a very good 4th starter. The knuckleball makes him
different. Some games it isn't working and he gets clobbered way more often
than the average "good" pitcher. When it works really well he has a very
high degree of success and pitches more excellent games than you would
expect from the average "good" pitcher. Some people get lost in the bad
games and forget the good ones. Vice-versa too I imagine. It can be
frustrating because also unlike other pitchers you really can't get a read
on his stuff on a particular day by watching him warm up in the BP. Also in
the games he can start off awful and then become unhittable, or he can have
5 shutout innings, then like flipping a light switch, get lit up like a 4th
of July fireworks display. There is a higher degree of uncertainty with him
than with most pitchers. Despite that in net over his career he has been a
major help to the team and he remains a positive force until now. I can hope
that he strings together a long stretch of good to great starts that doesn't
end until after the World Series. Most likely I will have to settle for
something short of that.
