To add to Dano's comments. Wake hasn't exactly been the worst pitcher on the staff in the last, let's say five years. If he was going off a cliff due to age, then I would agree. But right now he is a valuable and cheap member of the staff.
How he rated by ERA+ using the top five starters in innings:
I added VORP as a way to weight the ERA+ by innings pitched:
2006 - #2 VORP
Schilling 116 48.6
Beckett 92 19.9
Wakefield 100 15.2
Lester 97 12.2
Clement 70 -5.2
2005 - #1
Wakefield 106 34.5
Wells 99 25.1
Clement 96 23.7
Arroyo 98 18.7
Miller 89 6.9
2004 - #4
Schilling 150 75.8
Martinez 125 54.0
Arroyo 121 27.4
Wakefield 100 13.0
Lowe 90 -8.3
2003 - #2
Martinez 212 74.6
Wakefield 115 33.2
Lowe 105 26.7
Burkett 91 15.7
Fossum 86 0.2
2002 - #3
Lowe 171 80.8
Martinez 196 70.1
Wakefield 157 50.9
Burkett 98 21.3
Castillo 87 6.5
So on average, he's been the Sox' #2.6 starting pitcher and has averaged a 29.4 VORP for about $4M a year. That looks like a bargain to me. For reference, Vincente Padilla had a VORP of 29.2 last season, and in the off-season signed a contract that is paying him $9M this year.
