babbled:
Don't get me wrong - I'm glad we have Papalbon but here's the usual
situation: Rivera needs 18 pitches to get 4 outs and Papas needs 27 to
get 3 outs. That's why Rivera can still get it done in October. Time
will tell if Paps can.
Well, yes it is true that Papelbon is unproven in the playoffs. The
emotional pressure under those circumstances can be intense which can be
an issue. But is there any known relationship between number of pitches
per out and playoff effectiveness? Didn't Eck used to throw a lot of
pitches too?
Bill Campbell threw a lot, too, back in the 70's. He was lights out for a
year or two. Then the team burned him out and I started calling him "Blow it
in the ninth" Campbell.
