I would have responded earlier, but I'm still trying to discern the
difference between "Windows" IE and "Microsoft" IE...

Nobody's mentioned this yet, but on occasion, if IE is acting up and I know I
need to reboot to fix it (which take like half an hour on this dinosaur), I
enter the url I want in the standard "Windows explorer" (i.e. file browser)
and usually works.
