You DO know ST counts for exactly nothing. Papi has been pretty poor
this
spring too. Do you think he's washed up?- Hide quoted text -

I wonder if Hansen and Delcarmen think spring training doesn't mean
anything. They are heading to Pawtucket based on
their performance in the spring. But I'm sure they are looking at
this in a positive manner
Everyone (except present company I guess) knows the one exception is with
the young pitchers trying to win one of the last couple of spots on the
staff. Both have options and with all the veterans vying for jobs, it
was a
tough make for these kids. Both had rough springs and merely made the
decision easier.
I know I've won an argument when someone pulls out the "everyone
knows" defense. It really means I have nothing to prove it
Gosh. I didn't know I was in a contest. I thought we were having a
conversation.
How about Kyle Snyder? Do you think his performance in Spring
Training meant nothing?
Once again, as a young pitcher (with no options), he had to prove his
value...and did IMO. 2.53 ERA, 12 SO in 10 innings...
But how can that matter.....it was just Spring training. How can it
be important to a young pitcher (a well know fact) if the at bat taken
by the opposition doesn't matter?
I'm going to try one last time to explain this. It CAN matter for an
individual player. It does not matter what the outcome of the games are, or
for the players who we all KNOW, beyond a shadow of doubt, will be on the
team. For a team like the Red Sox, there are precious few openings.
For the young pitchers...there are pitchers who are still developing...who
we pretty much know will not make it anyway. The coaching staff and scouts
are well aware who they are pitching to. Also, simply because it doesn't
matter, doesn't mean big league hitters aren't trying to hit everything
thrown to them. They are still up there taking their hacks.
Papelbon and Tavarez? What they did in Spring Training didn't have
anything to do with their roles on the team this year?
Not really. I would have still preferred to see Paps closing. Tavarez
(3.55) was really not that bad.
It doesn't really matter what you prefer. The oint here is that the
Red Sox prefered to have Paplebon in the rotation and one of the four
right-handed relievers step up and take the closer role. When that
didn't happen, in Spring Training games, the made a change. This was
a drastic change based on everything that had been reported since the
fall.
Maybe to you. I don't think I was alone on an island thinking there was at
the very least, a very good chance that Papelbon might very well still be
the closer if a deal was not forthcoming. I think they exhausted every
avenue and failed to find a doable deal. Papelbon saw no one had really
stepped up and made a case and took the initiative and said he really wanted
that job. There are still four good starters and decent candidates to fill
the 5th spot.
Joel Pinero?
3.38 ERA in ST. Jury is still out.
Sorry but if the Jury was stillout Paplebon would still be in the
rotation. This guy was not given 4 million to be just another guy in
the bullpen.
No he wasn't. Every deal doesn't pan out. He did nothing to indicate he
would be good enough for the role, yet he wasn't a total disaster. He could
still be a candidate for that 5th spot starter/long relief guy.
Doug Marabelli? Ok I'll give you that one.....but in fairness, his
performance in the regular season doesn't seem to mean much
either.......
eh...
These are all players who had their roles changed based on what
happened in the spring games and the Red Sox are pretty set team.
Other teams had far more questions that were answered in the last
month.
There honestly weren't many questions. Why? Because there were few jobs
open. Most of the other teams simply aren't as good.
I'm pretty new to the optimism stuff but its tough to say the players
who are doing well "look good" but the players doing poorly don't
count
You have an odd notion of optimism.
Spring training does matter. Its a lot more difficult to assess
performance because there are many more factors involved than in the
regular season but it does matter.......I'm positive of that
It matters. It could be shorter, but it matters because of the reasons I
noted, and to get everyone ready for the season. Just as in any sport,
the
results themselves aren't that important for the most part. Just get the
team in shape and stay healthy. It's probably most important for the
pitchers.
Blue skies everyone...I love you all- Hide quoted text -

So which is it? Does it "count for nothing" or does "it matter"?
Do you think everything is black or white? No shades of gray...or color?
Its baseball Dano.....you're either safe or you're out;.....you either
win or you lose.
They keep score so it can be in black and white. Everyone knows that
It matters.....it just takes a lot more effort to figure out why stuff
is happening. Most people just prefer to ignore it. Its easier.
And some just prefer to focus solely on the negative. There were more good
things to take away from this camp, but you choose to ignore those.- Hide quoted text -
That was the old me.....I'm changing my handle to "Blue-skies1918"
Tavarez will win 20......Alex Cora could start at Short for any of the
other 25 major league teams......Wily Mo just got that big
naturally.......Schilling will fit into size 32 inch pants by
July.... Its all good.
We shouldn't look at the bad stuff. In fact we should just watch NESN
episodes of Sox walk-off games from 2004.
Blue-skies.....and Peace
