I'm thinking McEwing might get a lot of playing time and could be a
valueable pickup. Maybe they should sign Womack too.
I think it was a mistake to get rid of Womack during 04's Spring
Training, but I am definitely not willing to make up for that mistake by
signing him now.
No, I think we can confidently stick a fork in Womack. He's done.
He would've been very helpful in 2004, one of his rare good years.
Certainly more valuable than Matt friggin Duff who he was traded for.
But it was a weird situation. Womack was coming off surgery and the
Red Sox didn't think he could throw well enough to back up at
shortstop (he played 2B with St. Louis after they signed him). Due to
Nomar's injury and Pokey's weak bat, they needed a backup SS. Plus, I
don't think anyone expected Womack to be able to hit at all at that
point. I still don't know how he put up those numbers with the Cards.
Anyway, Boston made an awful choice in keeping Cesar Crespo, making it
harder for me to mildly defend the Womack cut....
The real question: Had Boston kept Womack, would he have beaten
Posada's throw in Game 4 of the ALCS? :-)
