Quick, turn on WFAN or go to http://www.wfan.com for the streaming
audio. Mad Dog Russo will be interviewing Grady Little in
approximately three minutes! Should be very interesting.
Thanks for the warning.
It was a good interview. I can't help it. I like Grady Little as a
person. He said nice things about Nomar and Drew. After the
interview, Mad Dog Russo had a good take on Grady: that's he's not
someone you'd trust to make a key strategic decision in a big spot,
but he does do a good job of keeping a team happy, focused, and ready
to play over the course of a long season.
There's something to be said for that, IMHO. We as fans often think
of managing as what you do in APBA and Strat-o-Matic: making lineups,
deciding when to pinch-hit and change pitchers, and so forth. And
there's no question that strategy is a key component of managing. But
there's definitely a lot more to it, especially in this day and age.
It must be awfully tough to lead 25 players, many of whom have huge
egos, some of whom might be on the juice, and nearly all of whom make
a lot more money than you do, from February through--one hopes--late
If given the choice, I'd rather have a good "clubhouse man" who's a
poor strategist than an APBA whiz who can't manage human beings.
Fortunately for Boston, I firmly believe that Mr. Francona is
excellent at both aspects, and I hope he manages this nine for many
years to come. I couldn't be happier with the man.
