Yes. As a matter of fact I did. I was pissed the year Pedro felt it was his right to shut it down because the team was out of it. I said so then and I haven't changed my mind. I fully understand your elite players will get some special treatment and extra allowances. I don't even care that Manny comes to camp a bit late. I think it would be preferable that he respect his teammates and especially his employers enough to communicate a reason for his tardiness. That's just common courtesy. I also understand about the official reporting date. That doesn't change the fact that the rest of his mates are in camp and working without him.
Manny has always shown up in great shape. He is supposedly a hard worker in the off-season. Tavarez has even said Manny was working out on his own.
I never said otherwise.
What if every top player...Schilling...Ortiz...Varitek...chose to attend on their own schedule? Do you think this team would not be put at a competitive disadvantage by that? Manny sets a lousy example and does nothing to promote a good, close, unselfish team to go out there and take on their opponents with the best preparation to compete at the very highest level. That's what I assumed we were striving for...not a country club full of malingering superstars.
Manny a malingerer? Hardly. By most accounts he one of the hardest working athletes.
I did not mean that MANNY was (or anyone else was for that matter) a malingerer. My point was that by setting the wrong example...setting the standard...the team could cultivate that attitude among the (admittedly) lesser players.
I am happy to hear that. I just heard the same on the radio. Great. Hope that puts an end to this. I do wonder though if the issue hadn't been raised, would he have thoughtlessly gone. I'll also be interested to see what happens with the promoter who sold tickets with the promise of Manny in attendance.Again the media is pressing this issue. Manny said he wasn't attending the carshow. The only report that he was came from the show sponsor (who wants to sell tickets). It's been denied throughout. And today's reports on it confirm it.
As far as a valid reason...If Manny is really showing up late in order to sit by mom's side? If that's the case, I never said I had a problem with that. What pissed me off was to hear he had signed on to appear at that car show. If he does that, after using his mothers illness as an excuse...well what do YOU think of that?
