Lowell only came here as a throw in because the Marlin's wanted to unload
the contract. He was considered by everyone to be grossly overpaid. Only
slightly less by most after a pretty good year. He is at the end of a 4
year/32 million dollar contract.
Helton was given a 9 year/141 million deal. He is in the middle of that.
That, combined with a definite decline (while his contract escalates), is
why he is not in demand.
Of course Helton would be an upgrade on the field. That is not the point.
What is in dispute is his *value*. How much should we give up?
Would YOU really give Lowell, Tavarez, Delcarmen and Hansen? And still pay
more for Helton than Lowell? For four more years?- Hide quoted text -

Arguments are a lot easier to win when you use stuff your opponent
never said.
I didn't SAY that was what you said. I merely asked whether you would give that up.
I think your the first guy to bring up Hansen.
I'm certainly not. Read through the threads...as well as the news reports.
But Lowell, Tavarez and Delcarmen for Helton and 28 million dollars is
a no brainer
First of all that's a whole new proposal I had not seen before. I read at the time the deal fell apart (right after the owner of the Rockies interjected himself into this) that they insisted on two prospects. I didn't invent this. It was widely reported. That's when the Sox walked away. The Sox were also none to pleased with their players names being bandied about like this by the principals. The offer being talked about here, sounds like spin to me.
But 28 million off the 90 million left on his contract is not enough either.
Three average guys for one great one.......
One former great one...now a good one. And overpaid at that. 62 million for 5 years is what the Sox would have to pay him...until he's 38. Helton DOES have an escape clause after this season. Think he'll take it like Drew did?
