Looking ahead to 2008, who will play 3rd base for the Sox? Will the Sox
sign a free agent, is there a 3rd baseman in the minors, will they move Youk
back to 3rd and then look for a 1st baseman. You know that Theo is looking
ahead and already making plans. Just curious..

There is also no evidence that it won't be reversed this year. At 33
he should have quite a bit left. But that isn't the point. Every
proposed trade has a point where a team feels the cost is too high.
The Red Sox determined that Lowell, Tavarez, and Delcarmen plus a
little over half of Helton's salary is too high. They have to draw the
line somewhere. You can argue over where it should be, but not that it
shouldn't exist. I happen to think that Delcarmen will become a very
good major league reliever, quite possibly this year.
Yes, I agree on the framework. I don't think Lowell or Tavarez
(Tovarez to you) have much trade value, and I think Helton does if
someone is willing to pay around half of his salary. So the deal
evaluation comes doen to Delcarmen. I like him and often defended him
and would like to see him stay and succeed with the RS, and I think
there is a good chance of it. He had a good first half and a bad 2d,
and it is not clear that the bad finish was not due in significant
part to his hand injury. But I don't know.
I do value Helton. I think it is a very good bet that he will recover
from a not-bad 2006. The trade works for the RS b/c we have too much
pitching <g>, and Youk is more valuable at 3rd. Part of my dislike of
the Beckett trade was it meant Youk was our first baseman. He did
okay, but that is a position we certainly can improve on.
Anyway, I think Theo was good at keeping his trap shut during the
negotiations, and even LL mostly buttoned up. So I'm not in 2d
guessing mode. But I would like Helton on the team.
You are smart man
