Well I disagree with you on Hansen. It gets worse though. I'm hearing
that Hansen is just part of the deal. I've heard Lowell and either
Hansen or Delcarmen and a lesser prospect. I also heard Lowell and
Clement originally. I didn't even care for that, but it sounds better
than every variation I've heard since. Tavarez was also raised, but I
guess that's not good enough for the greedy SOBs, they want a younger,
cheaper pitcher. Supposedly the money aspect has already been agreed
on...the Rockies would pick up half Helton's salary. That's still a lot
of money, unless he makes a drastic return to his old form...how likely
is that at 33?

Nobody will take on Clement. He will probably be injured up until he is
a
free agent. Why would any team accept him as part of a deal?

If I am the Rockies, if I am taking on half of Helton's salary, I am
going
to want prospects in return. Hansen and Delcarmen for Helton and one of
their good prospects should do it for me, if Delcarmen has to be
involved.

--Even at half his 16 million salary (it swells to 19M in 2011), Helton
is
still grossly overpaid for the production he's likely to give you as a
first
baseman. That's why they should jump at divesting themselves of half that
contract. Look at it this way. Lowell and Clement combined, only make a
couple of million more this year...and we thought they were both overpaid.
After this year, they would be clear of those contracts and would then
have
somewhere in the vicinity of 8-10 million per year to spend in other
areas.
I have very little interest in Helton otherwise. If they'd take a lower
level prospect in the deal as well, fine.- Hide quoted text -- Show quoted

1. The reports from WEEI and take it for what's worth, is that the Red
Sox want Clement and Lowell going to Colorado in this deal and who
could blame the Red Sox for that as Lowell and Clement are worthless
and will get paid a combined of 18,825,000 going by their numbers last
year which might be a low estimate. They also report that the Rockies
WOULD have to eat a nice chunk of Helton's contract.

I was opposed to the Lowell/Beckett acquisition trade. However, it is very
unfair to say Lowell is worthless after the good season he had last year. He
was better than most 3rd baseman. According to ZR numbers Lowell was one of
the majors best defensive 3rd basemen.

2. Going by statistics Todd Helton is on the down side of his career
but he was still one of the few .400 obp guys last season. He did hit .
300 although in a hitter friendly ball park. I recall a post here or
in dirt dogs a few years ago that showed that Helton's ball park
factors showed that the dimensions of Fenway Park would help his
offensive numbers. He is also a golden glove caliber first baseman.

3. Would I be willing to part with Delcarmen or Hansen? Probably not
Delcarmen but I would be willing to split with Hansen as long as the
Rockies would be willing to eat more than 50% of Helton's contract and
take on the contracts of Lowell and Clement. Will this happen? Depends
how desperate the Rockies are.

I guess in the end I like the thought of Helton coming to this team
as long as its for Clement, Lowell, and Hansen. If the Rockies were to
take 50% or more of his contract on we would owe him 40 million total
over the next five seasons (correct me if I am wrong) but if they are
willing to take on Lowell / Clements 19 million that takes us down to
21 million over five years which is a little over 4 mil a season which
would be a spectacular deal for the Red Sox even if we were to lose
Hansen.

Our team would look like this:

1B- Helton
2B - Pedroia
SS - Lugo
3B - Youkilis
C - Tek
LF - Manny
CF - Coco
RF - Drew
DH - Ortiz

That is a really good line up and I think even though it doesn't
change the dimension of the team that much I think losing Lowell and
replacing him with Helton will do wonders.
