This may be fodder for another thread altogether mario, but
I'm curious a to why you're against the right to bear arms.
And hoping you don't use the old worn out interpretation that
personal arms bearing wasn't the intent of the Constitution.
Or that guns kill people so that I won't have to us the old
worn out comebacks.
I am butting in here...but I can't help myself. If you take out
the Constitution argument (which is a valid one in my mind) or
the fact that guns kill people...there isn't much of an argument.
Most folks aren't buying guns to display them on a wall. Why do
you think that gun violence is so common in America and not as
common elsewhere where there are more stringent gun laws?
Something about American culture? Perhaps the combination of
a (relatively) high percentage of citizens owning guns with
the large population living side-by-side in large cities? Or
perhaps a vestige of old west machismo/solipsism? Or the
multiracial society, which makes it easier to see a large part
of the population as "them" rather than "us?" Something else?
Dunno. Doesn't Canada have just as many gun-owners per capita?
I'm not sure it's easy to smoke the answer to this issue out.
If you saw Bowling for Columbine I think you can find the answer there.
Hint: It ain't the guns...
Huh? How many slaughters like that could have been carried out with knives or pipes/bats or the like? Anyone can kill. I think the point is, anyone, even a 90 lb. kid can be a mass murderer with guns.
I'm not even opposed to responsible, trained and licensed gun ownership. Within reason of course. Assault weapons should not be floating around. But the handgun problem needs to be addressed.
As long as I'm getting involved in this...someone brought up the fact that cars kill more people than guns in this country. Imagine how many more would die if there were no training, licensing or restrictions on who could drive. It's a ludicrous argument anyway. Guns have one purpose. We all know what that is.
