Re: NYY payroll

The bottom line is that George has the luxury of playing with the house
money, a luxury enjoyed by no other MLB owner. Those are the simple
facts of baseball life.

To the Yankee-haters awaiting the demise of the Evil Empire, that will
come when a new ownership takes over. With a franchise presently
valued at over $1 billion, their debt service will be too top-heavy for
them to carry a payroll anywhere close to $200 million.

Until then, it will be business as usual, more of the same.

Yes, I'm a Yankee fan. No, I'm not embarrassed by their payroll--nor
would I expect any RSN partisan to be embarrassed if the Red Sox had
the highest payroll in baseball. .

Friends of the Nation,

I live near NYC, right in the belly of the beast, as it were.
Throughout all my years of battling the local NYY fans, I have found
one sure way of getting (and staying!) under their skin. No matter how
much they say the arguments are lame or tired (BOS spend tons of money
too! BOS is number 2! BOS will be the highest payroll ever to not make
the playoffs!), it DOES bother them that their payroll is
embarrassingly higher than EVERY OTHER TEAM, BOS included.

So, in this unfortunate time of "wait 'til next year" at least we can
continue to do our best to undermine their happiness. Don't let the
NYY fans convince you to drop the issue. They will vehemently say
otherwise, but deep down inside their evil little hearts they KNOW they
win every year because the playing field is not level. The painful
truths gnaw at their excitement, tempering it to the point where they
can never feel winning has been fully earned. They will SWEAR that
they don't care and that NYY is only "playing by the rules", but trust
me when I tell you that they know the game is rigged every year because
of a system which gives them just about every advantage one team can
have over another. They win more often because simple logic dictates
that the team with the most resources, the best ability to retain
homegrown players, the upperhand in international talent, the most
All-Stars, and, most importantly, the ability to bury any mistake and
offset any injury will win most of the time.

Here is all anyone needs to know about the subject:

1. The NYY payroll ($198,662,180) is at least 65% higher than EVERY
other team in MLB.

2. The only reason the BOS payroll is as high as it is ($120,100,524)
is that they have to make at least an ATTEMPT to keep up with their
main division rival. (What choice do they have?)

These are the facts and they are undisputed.

Ever heard this one? "The Red Sox could spend more if they want to;
Steinbrenner just wants to win more than he cares about making money."
Uh-huh. An oft-used NYY fan fallacy. Steinbrenner does not put any
greater percentage of his profits into his team than the other owners
do. His partners would lynch him if that were the case. He simply
parlays his profits into more profits. You can do that when your
metropolitan area has the largest population in the US, even when you
divide it in half (to take into account that there are two MLB teams).
(See below.)

(2000 census figures)
1. New York--Northern New Jersey--Long Island, NY--NJ--CT--PA CMSA
= 21,199,865
(divided by two = 10,599,933)

2 Los Angeles--Riverside--Orange County, CA CMSA = 16,373,645
(divided by two = 8,186,823)

3 Chicago--Gary--Kenosha, IL--IN--WI CMSA = 9,157,540
(divided by two = 4,578,770)

4 Washington--Baltimore, DC--MD--VA--WV CMSA = 7,608,070
(divided by two = 3,804,035)

5 San Francisco--Oakland--San Jose, CA CMSA = 7,039,362
(divided by two = 3,519,681)

6 Philadelphia--Wilmington--Atlantic City, PA--NJ--DE--MD CMSA =
6,188,463

7 Boston--Worcester--Lawrence, MA--NH--ME--CT CMSA = 5,819,100

(Note that even when divided in half, the NY area is double that of the
Boston area.)

So, while you may be tempted to withdraw from the baseball scene now
that things haven't quite worked out, don't forget you still have work
to do. Reminding our NYY counterparts of their continuing tainted
success now becomes our first priority. Don't give up the fight!

Best wishes for a warm and wonderful offseason,
Inspector Javert

The inspector is right. When the subject of salary is brought up, Yankee
fans want to only point out that Boston has the 2nd highest payroll in
baseball. They always conveniently fail to point out that New York's
$200,000,000 is so much higher than Boston's payroll. It is true that the
Red Sox are forced to spend more on salary to try to stay within hailing
distance of the Yankees. But, as this year has shown, if any little thing
goes wrong for the Sox (such as an injury or signing under achieving free
agents), then the season is probably lost.

The Yankee fans I know expect to win the World Series every year because of
the caliber of players they buy - anything less, including a pennant, is
failure. But, I can only imagine how boring it must be to be a Yankee fan -
knowing that the team will once again greatly outspend even the 2nd highest
spending team to guarantee winning the division and getting into the
playoffs.

Nonetheless, the Yankees are in fact playing within the current rules and
apparently have no problem paying the so-called luxury tax. It sure makes
being a manager or GM of a team like the Yankees a no-brainer, doesn't it?
