Any Red Sox fan should care about Charlie Wagner, who died last week.
He spent 73 of his 93 years in the Red Sox organization. He pitched
for the team from 1938-46 (with three years interrupted by his service
in WWII), and was a good friend of Ted Williams. Wagner spent many
years after his playing career as a Red Sox coach, scout, minor league
instructor, and front office consultant. In terms of longtime service
to the organization, Wagner ranked with Johnny Pesky, Eddie Popowski,
and Frank Malzone. (Yaz and Williams are also up there, but their
post-playing contributions have been more ceremonial--generally a
month of hitting instruction in spring training.)
