This might be a cultural thing. Maybe Lee, like me, is unused to
grandstanding servicemen using the "defending your freedom" line.

Oh, give me a freaking break. First, that's exactly what he's doing
and second, he was responding with a reason to someone's insult about
not being around the Ng enough to have an opinion.

"I'm in the Navy" would suffice as an explanation.

And who are you, minister of newsgroup protocol?
If you understood the context in which he responded you might understand this better.

The
soldiers I know are rather more humble and realistic about their service
time.

::rolling eyes::

To most of them, it was a job, not a mission of destiny.

And you know this how?

Because I talk to them. My father, for example, joined up to learn to
drive. My mother joined up to get away from home.

Well, that certainly convinces me that the majority of the entire British military feel the same way.

I'm sure it was different for those who volunteered for WWII, but in
the UK, at least, it's more usual for those veterans to be humble and
coy about their service, rather than bombastic.

Oh, how veddy veddy propah.

That's just the way it is. It might explain Lee's (and my) reaction.

So we need to accommodate YOUR way of doing things and you get to insult ours. Yeah, that just about sums up the whole PC-infected world.

Pfft.

Very erudite.
