1. Beckett giving up so many home runs. The mystery is that he's never
given up any where near as many as he's likely to this year. Why so
many this year? And there's too much evidence other wise to say he just
sucks.
Possible reason:
Adjusting to a new and tougher league? The hopefull word being
"adjustING", as in it's a work in progress.
2. Schilling also giving up more home runs than any season in the past.
Possible reason:
Reinventing himself as an older and less of a power pitcher and learning
new pitches. Hopeful word being "reinventING", As in it's a work in
progress.
It would be unfair to ignore that Schilling has a lower BB/9 rate than ever
before in his career, currently at 1.06, while maintaining a k/9 rate just
a tad higher than he did during the 2004 season. He is indeed reinventing
himself. I'm not concerned about him. It's the rest of the pitching staff
that I'm worried about.
3. Lester getting into so much trouble early requiring short starts due
to high pitch counts.
Possible reason:
Learning to pitch in the big leagues. Hopeful word being "learnING".
As in it's a work in progress.
The final results have been great so far, but he looks like a 10 run inning
waiting to happen. Of course, I would imagine that this is about as bad as
it gets with him, and he is only going to do better. But I can't imagine
that he is going to escape every single huge jam he gets in.
