Just because Bob's commercials look like crap, that doesn't necessarily
translate into lower overhead. For one thing, Bob's has it's own TV
production facility. This is highly unusual and somewhat expensive
compared to paying for production on an as-needed basis. They even do the
animation in house. And because they have made the investment, I suspect
they produce far more different commercials than necessary. And there's a
cost associated with each of them.

Naturally, someone who thinks Bob's commercials are effective would be
quick to point out that we're aware of them, we're talking about them, so
they must be getting the job done. But I can promise you I am not about
to buy any furniture from Bob's any time soon.

The reason Bob's has lower overhead is because they don't buy a lot of
furniture and then store it in a wharehouse until it is sold. They buy their
furniture as they sell it. In fact, if you put a piece of furniture on
lay-a-way and take too long to pay it off, there is no guaranty that the
model you bought will still be available by then. And they only offer store
credit, no moneyback (after 3 days or something like that).
