That's how the NFL works, but given his age, he may not be back.
He's just as likely to sign on with a more needy team.

He could play for just about any team given what I saw near the end of this
season. He's certainly not going to go without offers. The question
becomes will Willie take less to play with the Patriots again. I don't know
what he'll do, but either way the words coming through the media seem to
show both sides knew he was going to be cut. Both sides compliment each
other. Willie will have a job waiting for him in Foxboro when he quits
playing, and he knows it.
Sort of the anti-Damon situation.
