Jack McKeon, former Marlins manager, was on D&C on WEEI this morning.
Very entertaining guy, had a lot to say --
o Thinks Mike Lowell will rebound from a bad hitting year and will do
o Raved non-stop about Alex Gonzales. He *loves* this guy. Called him
the best fielding shortstop he's ever had, said that people watched the
Marlins and would say, "Wow, that's unbelievable!" and he'd tell them,
"That? That's routine for this guy." Went on and on about his ability
to turn the double play, his range, his arm... he absolutely LOVES
Gonzales. He also said he's a very quiet guy, and will probably have
no trouble in Boston.
o Said that Gonzales is not going to be as bad a hitter as people
think. He did say "He'll swing at pitches over his head and make you
want to shoot him" but also said that he drove in a lot of key runs and
doesn't get credit for getting some very timely hits.
o Thinks that Lowell and Gonzales on the left side of the infield will
continue to be a great combination and that the pitchers will love it.
o Thinks that Beckett will pitch better than Burnett. Oddly, he pretty
much threw Burnett under the bus. He said that Burnett has outstanding
stuff, but during the end of the season last year, in order to make a
playoff run, his three main pitchers (Willis, Beckett, and Burnett)
needed to pitch well, and he said Burnett wilted and stunk (he said
that Burnett was spotted 3,4 run leads and just had to hold them and
couldn't do it). Then, he said that Burnett blamed everybody but
himself for his poor showing. Thinks Beckett is by far the better
pitcher, and he has no qualms about his arm health.
