Lyford, I'm only seeing your replies (at least in this thread) via
google, so I can't quote you. I agree with you that it is far from clear
that Francona does not like playing young'uns (among a number of points
you make with which I agree).
Still, you (rightly) point out that it will be a cause for concern
if Snow is "replacing Youkilis every day or starting more than once a
week." And to that, I point to this, from an interview with Francona
on mlb.com (I don't feel like typing out the link, but I got to it by
checking out Sox Therapy on www.baseballprimer.com, and I'm sure you can
find it somewhere on www.mlb.com):
-----
MLB.com: It looks like Kevin Youkilis is finally going to get some
at-bats. I know you've enjoyed watching him in limited action
the last couple of years. How much do you look forward to
seeing what he does with this opportunity?
Francona: A lot. He deserves it. We're going to split it up with him
and J.T. Snow, and some of it depends on how they're swinging
the bat, that's the way the game is. That's the way it's
supposed to be. But he's going to definitely play a lot and
I think he deserves it and I think he'll be able to handle it.
I think on our side of it, having J.T. come in and kind of help
him out a little bit is good too. We have a guy who is a Gold
Glove caliber defender. I think it just bodes well for us. I
think they complement each other very well.
-----
I think that the above exchange provides sufficient reason to fear
that Snow is going to be the left-handed part of a platoon at first base,
and/or that Francona will try to find ample opportunities for Snow to
get on the field as a defensive replacement. Given that Snow is the lefty
and that he's considered the better defender, I predict (barring injury)
that Snow gets more at bats than Youkilis.
And then there's the following, also worthy of concern:
-----
MLB.com: You kind of have three guygs for two spots with J.T., Youk, and
Mike Lowell. Do you look at that as a situation where you can
get everyone enough playing time, and at the same time, keep
everybody fresh?
Francona: Yeah, I think so. But I look at Lowell and think, Lowell is
our third baseman and he's going to play over there. If he
needs a rest, we can do something different... <snip of his
talking up how good Lowell could be>
-----
Again, I read this as Lowell plays third, and Snow and Youkilis
split time at first (and, for the reasons I mention above, that means
Youkilis ends up getting the least time of all three). I think that's
a bad sign. Again, I'm totally reading tea leaves on this, however;
moreover, it's entirely possible that Lowell bounces back and Snow hits
like he did a year or so ago when he was quite good. I wouldn't bet
on either thing happening, but both certainly could.
Catch you later.
