Few people are, but being in the top 10% of pitchers in your league, at an
age when most pitchers are still improving, is pretty damn good. However...
just as food for thought....
Pedro J Martinez
Age ERA+
22 123
23 120
24 117
25 221
Josh Beckett
Age ERA+
23 132
24 108
25 119
Now, obviously, Josh is no lock to suddenly explode for a 220 ERA+ season,
but at a similar age, their performances aren't *that* much different. Pedro
was a 120 ERA+ guy in his early 20s, much like Josh. Pedro started a year
earlier, with his 1st 100IP season at age 21 (as a reliever, though); Josh's
1st 100IP season was when he was 22.
Few pitchers will ever be close to as dominant as Pedro was when he was
*Pedro*. But it's certainly within the realm of possibility (statistical
projections would probably say probability) that he's still improving and
could even break out. Even if Schill is healthy next year there's a good
chance Beckett's the Sox' best pitcher. That's a damn good acquisition any
day.

Well, Pedro wasn't either until his age 25 season. And Josh does have that
WS MVP that Pedro never has gotten :)

Partly true, but Lowell is a separate player onto himself who has a non-zero
chance to make a positive contribution in his own right or could conceivably
be traded (there are Minnesota rumors, apparently, for some bullpen help).
