Re: What is A Bandwagoner/Fair Weather Fan?

Thank you for changing it to "weather" from *weathered.*

I will abbreviate fairweather fan to FWF for convenience.

A FWF is a fan who only cheers their team when they are winning or
playing well.

Most fans here cheer for the Red Sox both when they're winning or losing. We just react differently. TO THE PLAYERS and MANAGER, not THE TEAM.

Some FWFs will ignore their team when they are not
winning nor playing well. Other FWFs will scapegoat various members of
the team when they are playing poorly or losing.

A scapegoat is (usually) a non-deserving entity taking the blame. Fans here rarely find *scapegoats.* They do, however, criticize (strongly) bad mistakes (errors), inept play (mental lapses) or indefensible managerial decisions.

You can make an
argument that the abusive type of FWF is worse than the
passive/avoidant FWF because in the former case you have active
negativism while in the latter case just apathy.

You're confusing FWF with people who point out the negative in appropriate situations.

In any case whether it be ignoring the team or ridiculing various
members they will not support and cheer on the team when they are
losing.

You're thinking of Curly again. Most of the rest here support the team through thick and thin. It's curious that you seem to think criticizing indicates non-support.

You can spot FWFs by the frequency of their using abusive epithets
toward team members and management when the team does poorly.

You can spot FWFs by the frequency of their second guessing decisions
made by managers *after* the fact.

This is ridiculous. A fan (who is not at the game) almost ALWAYS reacts after the fact. Booing the insertion of Timlin with runners on would make it sound like booing Timlin, NOT the manager for making a bonehead decision.

It's not so much a matter of hindsight as reflection.

A loyal fan OTOH will support their team win or lose.

That's a given. I strongly suggest explaining this to Curly. Mention the (non)Holocaust to get his attention.

A loyal fan will not use gratuitous degrading epithets toward members
of the team nor management.

It's called venting, Richard. You *never* vent? What would you like? Rather than saying "Francoma is a bozo," saying "Francona, who appears to be in a complete coma-like trance when it comes to strategy, lineups and pitching changes, (IMHO) a pitching change that could be inferred as clown-like, if not darn right stupid, considering that Timlin allows too many inherited runners to score"?

We could, I suppose. Or one could just say: "Francoma is a bozo." Says bandwidth.

A loyal fan will try to give management the benefit of the doubt when
his decisions turn out badly especially considering that they don't
have all the information to make the decision.

(You need a comma somewhere in there so we can figure out who doesn't have the information. I'll assume you mean the fan, although it wouldn't surprise me if you mean Francona.)

Ludicrous. I tried it at work when working for people who had no idea of how to run a Tech Support office. I gave them so much benefit of the doubt that I wasn't even surprised when they went under. Instead, I prefer to call an idiotic move an idiotic move. Saying someone made a stupid move or that they behaved/played like a jerk is not the same as saying they're stupid or a jerk. Of course, the implication is there. You do it all the time. As in referring to people needing diagnoses, medication, or explaining narcissism, for instance. Believe it or not, that comes across as calling them mentally ill, in need of serious help, or calling them narcissists. Don't hide behind the grammar.

A loyal fan will give constructive criticism when appropriate but the
criticism will be reasonably respectful.

Sometimes criticism is neither destructive or constructive. Explaining to someone like Millar that he's not hitting very well doesn't help much. It's highly unlikely people such as you or I would be able to explain the why of his mediocrity (talent?). Telling him he sucks may not be kind, but it's true.

I encourage those who want to participate in a discussion of FWFs to
do so in a respectful way and avoid childish personal insults. Oh,
childish personal insults may also be a clue that you are dealing with
a FWF and I suspect they will make that quite clear by how they
respond to this post. Just watch.

Your our innate insecurity is showing again, Richard.
